Songwriter John Williams' current work — ranging from soulful folk ballads to funkified jazz and blues — might be best described as Roots American Music, but his deepest early influence came from another world entirely.
Hardly surprising to his followers, John mentions favorites including the Allman Brothers and Jackson Browne — as well as recent inspirations like Ryan Adams & Gregory Alan Isakov. Yet in the next breath cites the album that changed everything for him: Where Have I Known You Before, by jazz-fusion pioneers Return To Forever.
All of which add up to a body of work that’s deeply personal, yet very accomplished. Qualities evidenced by the warm reception John's new material enjoyed during a recent performance with brother Chas (a Nashville multi-instrumentalist perhaps best known for his work with Nanci Griffith) at a local theater Songwriter Series show.
As a songwriter, John draws from the same well he taps for his best work as a performer — the location of which he’s yet to pinpoint on a map. “Maybe the best piece of advice I ever got from another musician was, ‘When inspiration hits, it’s coming from somewhere else — so get out of the way and let it flow.’ That’s when magic happens." And isn’t that ultimately what all great music is about?
